Dirty Dongbei

By Eric Abrahamsen, published

Appalling things northeasterners say.

While we were in a taxi, our voluble driver starting discussing politics, principles of honesty, and taxi drivers who cheat. To give us a vivid conception of his own trustworthiness, he said the following: "别看我脑子长得象卵子,我还懂什么叫道德." Which roughly translates as: "Never mind I've got a head like a cock-and-balls, I still know what morality is."

I'd translate it as something like having a "half-set of chromosomes" :)

Love that quote though. Might use it some day.

I wonder what the people in north east would say when they read this.

Good translation, but I am not sure whether you heard the driver clearly, as to me it's so strange to hear of the expression in Chinese "卵子". Are you sure you are correct in pronouncing the word?Make sure what you put on the website, otherwise you will mislead others.

Yup, pretty sure we heard him correctly – there were a bunch of people in the car with me. Not to imply that everybody talks like this in the northeast, of course…

When you use it, don't forget to pronounce it lánzi!

Are you sure that lánzi should be translated into "卵子"?They are different in pronunciation! Maybe a Chinese dictionary is useful for you. Thank you for reminding me, but I am not interested in it.
