By Bruce Humes, published

Fake news

Alternative facts

How would you render them?

I feel like

山寨新闻

does 'fake news' justice . . .

Reporting on Kellyanne Conway's answers on Meet the Press the NYT Chinese web site uses 另一种事实 to render "alternative facts."

无中生有、断章取义seem to serve the purpose.

另类事实 would have been cool, but I guess that's another kind of "alternative". I like the 山寨新闻!

Saw a good one: 替代事实,which draws on the usage of 替代医学。

@ Anna Gustaffson Chen

For "alternative facts," I too thought immediately of 另类事实.

No doubt 替代医学 is the flavor of the day and all very PC. But to me, it sounds a bit like voodoo . . .

The "Legal Star" fake newspaper that used to be sold to unsuspecting arrivals at Beijing train station was referred to as "假新闻". There's an English translation of a report archived at EastSouthWestNorth.

山寨to some degree stresses the fact the goods or products are fake and low, so 山寨新闻doesn't make this sense. "Alternative"can be translated literally into Chinese as "替代" as in "alternative energy"(替代能源 nonetheless, 替代事实is not a good expression of Chinese. Fact is fact, but how much of it (or another part of the fact)does the speaker or the writer of that fact want you to know is another matter, which is alternative fact in my opinion. So 断章取义can achieve the same effect as alternative fact does.

@ Dave Haysom

No question (in my mind) that 假新闻 definitely translates "fake news" well. And it will probably win out in Chinese media.

But personally speaking, I feel that both "alternative facts" and "fake news" are being talked about right now in a way that indicates they are somehow being seen as new and distinct phenomena.

The reason I asked everyone to join in the discussion is that I believe we should be able to come up with some terms that are both accurate and slightly . . . edgy.
