The Best Untranslated Books

return to resources

The main reason Paper Republic exists is because there are so many deserving Chinese books that are desperately seeking a translator, and a publisher. We believe that more Chinese literature should be translated – because it’s great literature that deserves a wider audience.

In 2009, we published a list of nine books that we loved, and wanted to be able to read in English. Translator Cindy Carter commented at the time, “This is it, my friends, the dream-list. If we could somehow manage to translate these works into English within the next decade, people would remember this as the golden age...”

Well, we’re delighted to say that five of the nine the books on our original list are now available in English!

We are in the process of preparing a new list of gems that merit being published in English – watch this space for more information! Or feel free to contact info@paper-republic.org with a suggestion.
