小姨多鶴 (lit. Little Aunt Crane)

Novel by Yan Geling.

When the Japanese government abandons the plan to protect the “Manchu Wasteland Group” consisting of Japanese families, a young girl of 16, Duo He (Crane) ends up in the hands of human traffickers. She is sold to a Chinese family as the second wife to the son, Zhang Jian, solely as a tool of reproduction. The book is also about Zhang Jian’s Chinese wife, Huan. Little Aunt Crane is revolves around a Japanese woman, but it is a story of Chinese people. It is also a story about two women. Crane and Huan are enemies in terms of countries and family roles, but their roles as women and mothers overcome those enemy lines. This is the beauty of the book – in times of strife and sufferance; there is still humanity and kindness to be found.
