画梦录 (lit. Painted Dreams)
Novel by He Qifang.
A collection of seventeen poetic essays, published in 1936 by the May Fourth author and poet He Qifang. An experimental work for an experimental literary age, Painted Dreams weaves first-person narratives, dream sequences, retellings of ancient myths and realistic, third-person vignettes together into a cohesive artistic whole. Unfortunately, He Qifang himself expurgated the original text in 1939 after joining Mao Zedong in Yan'an, making the original edition hard to find.
Excerpts have been published before in English (Bonnie McDougall, David Pollard, Canaan Morse), but never the entire collection.
