Note to Zhongnanhai: demolishing institutions trying to share Chinese culture with the world doesn't seem like the best way to boost soft power.

Well, this is sad news. If it were just gentrification, it would be easier to swallow, but I highly doubt that.

It is becoming harder and harder to justify some of my assumptions about what is happening in China and my (our) participation in that. The changes we are witnessing are not what I envisioned back in 1982 when I started studying Mandarin and imagined great things for the "people".

I do hope you can secure a new spot and continue to provide a quiet spot in the chaos that is Beijing for true literary introspection.
