Wei An 苇岸

Born in the outskirts of Beijing in 1960, Ma Jianguo took the penname “Wei An” from a poem written by Bei Dao. Influenced by writers such as Tolstoy and Whitman, as well as Thoreau, Wei An was a committed environmentalist and vegetarian. Excerpts from his collection of meditations “Life on Earth” were translated into English by Thomas Moran in the 2012 Mãnoa compilation Sky Lanterns. Wei An died of liver cancer in 1999.
