Novel by Ha Jin.
This is Ha Jin's fictionalization of his historical research into the Chinese participation in the Korean War. Yu Yuan joins the People's Volunteer Army and heads to Korea, following which he is taken prisoner by the Nationalists. What follows is a delicate balancing act between the Nationalists, Communists, Koreans and Americans, and an eventual, semi-tragic, return home.
