浮城 (lit. Floating City)
Novel by Liang Xiaosheng.
One of China’s first and most influential magical realist novels: one night a city breaks free of the surrounding mainland and, to the bemusement of the townsfolk, floats off into the blue yonder. The ensuing struggle to survive on this new ‘island’ soon strips away the veneer of civilisation and pits the inhabitants against each other in brutal and dramatic fashion. Incisive, savagely humorous social satire.
