Michael Rank graduated in Chinese studies from Downing College, Cambridge in 1972. He was a British Council student at Peking Languages Institute, Peking University and Fudan University, Shanghai 1974-76 and a Reuters correspondent in China 1980-84. This was followed by a posting in Zambia from where he travelled widely in east and southern Africa, and was later a chief sub-editor in London. He was a translator at Trade Marks Directory Service 1999-2012 and is now a freelance translator and journalist. He has written on China and North Korea for The Guardian, Asia Times, North Korea Economy Watch, etc. He is currently translating a novel for a Chinese publisher.
