Born in Jinan, Shandong province in 1971. He has taught in the Department of Experimental Art in the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and in the Department of Fine Art in the Shandong University of Arts, Jinan. Since the late seventies he has gained a reputation as a poet, artist, critic and curator. He began publishing his poetry in 1989, and his work includes Performance: Collected Poetry, the collections Orientations and Plight, as well as Discourses on Solitude and Loneliness (collected criticism), The Paintings of Sun Lei, and one volume dedicated to his work in Contemporary Classics of Chinese Ink Painting. He is editor-in-chief of the popular poetry journal Anyone.
