Tyler Cotton grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and inspired by his favorite video game’s mythic Asian setting, he began reading translations of Tang Poetry. He made his way to Middlebury College, where he took a curious turn down an alley and found himself neck-deep in all things Chinese. His studies of film and literature culminated in his own meager translations of Yuan Zhen's "romantic" poetry (艳诗) , for which he received the Chinese department award. From 2009-2013, he has spent most of his time immersing himself in the contemporary culture of Beijing, reading Chinese literature, and eking out a living by translating Chinese video games much like the one that set him on this path.

He now lives in Beijing and working on international PR for tech brands.
