Born in Shanxi province in 1967, Hou Ma began writing poetry in the 80s and publishing collections in the mid-90s. Previous collections include Elegy: Golden Pin, Just a Quick Kiss, The Garden in the Mental Hospital, Notes from Another Hand and That Rooster – Sixty Short Poems by Hou Ma. He’s won a number of domestic poetry prizes in the last decade, including the October prize for young authors, the first ever Tian Wen Poetry Prize in 2009, as well as Best Poet and Best Young Writer distinctions in 2007 and 2008, respectively. He now resides in Beijing.
