Born at Longtan in the county of Taoyuan in 1925, Chung was graduated from the Youth Teachers’ School at Zhanghua in 1945 shortly before Japan ended its colonial rule of Taiwan. He taught school and studied Chinese literature at Taiwan University for a year. He published his first short story, “After Marriage,” in “Rambler Magazine” in 1951 and won the Literature Prize of the Rotary Club West of Taipei in 1960.
