Hongwei Bao 包宏伟

Hongwei Bao is a queer Chinese poet, translator and academic based in Nottingham, UK. As a historian of contemporary Chinese queer history and culture, he is the author of Queer Comrades (NIAS Press, 2018), Queer China (Routledge, 2020), Queer Media in China (Routledge, 2021), Contemporary Chinese Queer Performance (Routledge, 2022) and Queering the Asian Diaspora (Sage, 2024). As a poet, he is the author of The Passion of the Rabbit God (Valley Press, 2024), Self-Portrait as a Banana (Poetic Edge, 2025) and Dream of the Orchid Pavilion (Big White Shed, 2024). His translation of Guo Jing’s ‘Wuhan Lockdown Diary’ has appeared in Words Without Borders; his translation of Mu Cao’s poems has appeared in & Change, Chainlink, Litter Magazine, Made in China, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Chinese Literature and Thought Today, Positions Politics and Samovar. He has also translated film subtitles for Queer China, ‘Comrade’ China (dir. Cui Zi’en, 2008) and New Beijing, New Marriage (dir. Fan Popo, 2009).
