I wonder what Feng Tang has done to miff Li Jingze so.

Publish his erotic novel, Oneness (不二), in Hong Kong rather than mainland China in order to avoid the censor's scissors?

Is he miffed? Apparently, this piece is Li Jingze's preface to a newly-released collection of Feng Tang's work, 《冯唐文集》. He's making a case for Feng Tang being more or less unique among contemporary writers (and certainly the HK publication of 不二 only cements Feng Tang's outsider status). I particularly like Li's comparison of the way writers are categorized, and how Feng Tang doesn't fit into the existing categories, to a pharmacy:

中药铺里，每一味药都有一个抽屉，但冯唐这味药装不进任何抽屉，只好放在柜台底下，知道他在，权当他不在。

This and the mad monk analogy set up Feng Tang as a fringe, cult writer, and I don't see anything faint or left-handed about Li framing his praise in those terms. Perhaps I'm more sympathetic to Li's piece because what sticks in my mind of what I've read of Feng Tang's work is not the characters or stories, but the attitude, the feel for setting and detail, and certain scenes and the way they're presented.
