The coffin fell apart.
There was the sound of decayed wood crumbling, and a cloud of smoke surged out, like water vapour from a hot steamer.

Yan Lianke / Carlos Rojas

Lu Li

Lu Li only has a single collection of short stories out, but she's got novels on the way, and shows promise. She's technically considered part of the Lower Body movement represented by Yin Lichuan and Wu Ang, among others, but where their sexuality sometimes turns ostentatious, she's much more unassuming, level-headed, and self-critical. She writes about Shanghai and women's lives, among many other topics, and shows gusto for experimentation.
