极花 (lit. The Pole Flower)

Novel by Jia Pingwa.

Based on a true story, Jihua is told from the perspective of young girl named Hudie who is sold to a peasant family in rural Shaanxi after being kidnapped from the city where she works as a trash collector. When she is finally rescued by her family, Hudie surprises everyone by running away to be with her captors--and her child. This powerful indictment of contemporary Chinese society was originally serialized in People's Literature.
