Yangzi lives in Guangzhou. He studied in the Chinese Department of Nankai University from 1980 to 1984, and then worked in Xinjiang. In 1990 he founded the poetry journal Big Bird with Xu Zhuang, Shen Wei, and others. From May 1998 to May 2004, he worked at Southern Weekly, where he presided over its arts section, transforming it into an important domain of avant-garde culture. Since its creation in June of 2004, he has worked as an associate editor at Southern People Weekly. He began writing poetry in the mid-1980s and has published the collections Gray Eyes and Rouge. His translations of poetry include Selected Poems of Mandelshtam, Selected Poems of Fernando Pessoa, and Selected Poems of Gary Snyder. He has also written a book about contemporary art, Interviews About Art.
