Interesting article.

Makes me think of Yiyun Li and Ha Jin, the China-born writers who have emigrated to the US, and Guo Xiaolu, who has made the UK her home. All three have consciously made the decision to write their fiction in English . . . while living abroad.

Li and Guo in particular have made it clear that they find writing in English intellectually and emotionally liberating.

The idea that one could do so as part of a university education -- within China -- is also intriguing.

I suppose the downside is that eventually such programs will begin to resemble some in the US, where it seems at times that fiction has become formulaic, partly as a result of many writers-to-be taking part in such courses where they learn how to write a highly "marketable" prose.
