Wang Xiaofang

王晓方

Wang Xiaofang is perhaps the best known author of "officialdom" fiction, a genre of Chinese literature dealing with the corruption and dealings in China's corridors of power. Wang knows whereof he speaks: before turning to authorship he was the personal secretary to Ma Xiangdong, a deputy mayor of Shenyang sentenced to death in 2001 (and executed in 2006) for gross corruption. In 1999 Wang Xiaofang resigned from his life of politics, and his first novel, Deadly Vortex (致命漩涡) was published by the Writers Publishing House in 2005 (the book was later retitled The Mayor's Secretary).

Since then Wang has published a series of novels detailing corruption in various aspects of Chinese society. His best known novels are Director of the Beijing Office published in 2007, and Notes of a Civil Servant, to be published in English translation by Penguin in 2011.
