Three new graphic novels

By Helen Wang, published

I know of at least three published this year...

Pai Hua Zi and the Clever Girl by Zhang Xinxin.
The story of a little Beijing girl prone to skipping school. She searches the vast city for Pai Hua Zi, a legendary Beijing phantom who steals children to far off, dangerous lands. Her wanderings through the ancient city's monuments, markets, and moldering old hutong mansions uncover Bejing's mythic foundation, and its most horrible secrets - until the phantom really does come to sweep all the city's youth away.

Little White Duck. A Childhood in China by Andrés Vera Martínez and Na Liu
The world is changing for two girls in China in the 1970s. Da Qin—Big Piano—and her younger sister, Xiao Qin—Little Piano—live in the city of Wuhan with their parents. For decades, China's government had kept the country separated from the rest of the world. When their country's leader, Chairman Mao, dies, new opportunities begin to emerge. Da Qin and Xiao Qin soon learn that their childhood will be much different than the upbringing their parents experienced.

A Chinese Life by Li Kunwu and P. Otie.
“Li Kunwu spent more than 30 years as a state artist for the Communist Party. He saw firsthand what was happening to his family, his neighbors, and his homeland during this extraordinary time. Working with French diplomat Philippe Ôtié, the artist has created a memoir of self and state, a rich, very human account of a major historical moment with contemporary consequences.”

I love Zhang Xinxin's work, particularly her collected short stories and her non-fiction work 'Lonely Drifter' - which was a fascinating insight into the intriguing creative and personal tensions and inspirations caused by walking between two cultures.
