Hai Nan was born Su Lihua in 1962. A member of the vanguard of China’s contemporary female authors, she won the Liu Li’an Poetry Prize in 1996, and the 2009 China Women's Literature Prize, among others. Her novels include Pattern, Nightlife, Caravan, and Private Life. Her essays are collected in Garden in the Air, Voice in the Screen, and My Magic Journey, and she has also published several collections of poetry including Fictional Rose, The Color of Lips, and What is Behind.
